What is the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica?

The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) is an honor society for high school students enrolled in Spanish and Portuguese and is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Formally organized as the Spanish National Honor Society in 1953, the name was changed in 1959. At present there are over 2,000 national and international chapters.

The purpose of the society is to recognize high achievement of high school students in the Spanish and Portuguese languages and to promote a continuing interest in Hispanic and Portuguese studies.

All secondary schools of recognized standing are eligible for membership. Chapter sponsors must be active members of the AATSP. Annual membership is now $65.00 for continuing members. First time members should visit the AATSP web site for special prices at www.aatsp.org

Any secondary school student who has maintained an honor average in the study of Spanish or Portuguese for a minimum of three semesters and is in the 10th grade or higher is eligible. Definition of “honor grade” is left to the discretion of the individual sponsor but it should be remembered that the SHH is an honor society for those students of high academic achievement.

Este es un mensage especial para los Directores Estatales de la zona II, y para todos los Asesores de la misma area pero también para todos los que lo lean:

Quiero saludarlos y recordarles que el 15 de febrero se aproxima y las aplicaciones para los diferentes concursos se deben enviar por tarde el lunes próximo 15 de febrero. Debemos darles a nuestros estudiantes la oportunidad de competir y recibir las becas y honores para ellos y para sus respectivos capítulos. Además nos queda tiempo para empezar la aplicación para el certamen del “Capítulo del Año”. Ojalá que recibamos numerosas solicitudes y que nuevos capítulos se unan a los que fielmente participan todos los años. Suerte y ánimo en sus esfuerzos y enseñanza. Este año estamos practicando mucha terminología sobre el clima, ¿Verdad? Aunque vivo en Florida tengo muchísimo frío y esta noche esperan una nevada en la parte norte del estado. Puedo decir que la zona II está practicando mucho con vocabulario tormentoso y helado, pero calentémonos con nuestro entusiasmo.
