The Foran High School World Languages Department hosted its eleventh annual World Language Week from March 30th through April 1st. Under the leadership of Department Chairperson, Charlene Convertino, students experienced a variety of interactive events that promoted understanding of, and respect for, other cultures. Each day of World Language Week 2010 began with a television commercial detailing the importance of learning a second language. Student announcers asked a daily trivia question followed by a word-of-the-day and music corresponding to the particular language featured each day. The Food Service staff worked diligently to prepare cultural dishes for the students to enjoy. A daily cultural activity substituted for regular classes for language students. The activities were carefully chosen to broaden and enhance the appreciation for diversity and to stress the importance of language study. Thursday, the final day of World Language Week, was “Spanish Day”. Michael Creane presented a second PowerPoint detailing his adventures living abroad in Spain. He encouraged students to put effort into their language studies and to travel abroad to perfect language skills. In addition, some students enjoyed a good cardiovascular workout as they danced to Latino music in a Zumba class. Typical Hispanic foods were for sale in the cafeteria.  Student performers were outstanding. The Spanish Club, along with advisor and World Languages Department Chairperson, Señora Convertino, worked very hard to raise funds to bring in live entertainment that promoted respect for diversity. This year’s stars were “Blue Jupiter”. This group of talented musicians inspired everyone to think of singing as a positive outlet for artistic expression. Group leader, Marty Gasper, discussed the history of Pop-Jazz-Funk A Cappella music and encouraged audience participation. It was an exciting conclusion to Foran’s 2010 World Languages Week.
